Listening Project La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain 2023
Captivated by the enchanting Silbo language of La Gomera, expressed through whistles, my current artistic exploration in this locale is a direct response to this unique form of communication. Grounded in an ethos of using local materials, my work becomes a conversation with the environment.
La Gomera's landscape, with its peaks and valleys, births a mesmerizing symphony through Silbo—a whistling language born out of necessity for communication in a steep and rugged landscape. It appears to mirror the contours of the island itself.
This simple yet exaggerated form encapsulates the transformative power of attentive engagement in our complex world, fostering connections beyond words. In today's war-torn world, listening goes beyond mere communication—it's a vital force for understanding and empathy. Amidst chaos, genuine listening acts as a bridge, connecting people on a profound level. It humanizes those affected by conflict, acknowledging their stories and pain, countering the dehumanization. Attentive listening unravels perspectives and grievances, offering a path to recognition and reconciliation.
