The Language of Wool The Shetland Islands, Scotland 2023
Wool, emblematic of the region, aligns with the narrative of energy as a craft and a source of warmth & commerce. Immersed in crofting and knitting circles, I realized that energy may indeed be the linchpin connecting various aspects of Islanders' existence. Integrating raw wool laden with lichen, dirt, and peat harvested from pastures I knitted a shawl. This immersive engagement with local craft and material aims to forge a deeper connection with the place. The evolution of wool, from raw to refined, unveiled a language characterized by patience and meticulous attention. Seeking guidance from those more adept, I became interwoven into the fabric of the community.
Adorned with a traditional straw Skekler hat from a local 'guising' custom, these images depict a fabricated creature, both alien and indigenous, endeavoring to bridge the gap and fathom the essence of the energy of the Shetland Islands.
